Animal of the Day: Tailless Tenrec

The Little Brother and Little Sister
(Grimm's: Bruderchen und Schwesterchen)

Here is my tight sketch for my school project based upon the European fairy tale; The Little Brother and Little Sister.  We are making a sort of pop up book/multi level illustration and i was really enchanted by this story after reading it. I chose the scene in the story in which the brother drinks from the magic river.

Why!?

So the other day my grandmother called for me from downstairs just as I had gotten out of the shower. Startled I replied and she asked that I bring a bag down from the attic with a pink sweater in it and two from the back.

I looked around for a bit

and quickly found the bag.

After wrestling the bag from pile I looked for the other two bags

At last I had found the sneaky bags

When I turned around I saw these strange black silhouettes on the vent

WHAT!!! What are these things! They were gigantic, but that wasn't what was so bad about them

THESE CATS HAD FINGERS!!!!!! Why on earth do these bugs have hands!!!??? Needless to say I got out of the attic soon. Now I'm not afraid of bugs but bugs with human hands!? Thats a different story!!!! I don't care how many legs a bug has as long as it has bug legs, but the second you and human appendages I'm done.

found an old scanner in my house! now I can scan my drawings while in the meantime I struggle to learn to get used to a tablet! Drawing on a cintiq or with traditional media has an intimacy with my drawing that the tablet removes. I have more practice to do with it, but I am glad I got this to work.

Color tests for Illustration

I'm doing an illustration of a Jazz club/bar and here I am trying to figure out the colors for the central figure, a torch singer. I want a pin up look to the singer so I looked at a lot of Bill Pressing's stuff. I also wanted a very jazzy look to it, and I think graphic shapes sort of embody jazz, so I also looked at Mary Blair. I like a lot of these and I think there is something in the black hair/black dress so I might do another color sketch of that one

New Sketch

So I'm planning on making this the first post of a more active blog. I think having a blog is good because it is sort of like having an accountability partner. So in my recent studies I've been trying to explore style. It is really hard lol. After a few hours of exploration today after class, this is what I came up with. It is still more realistic than I like, so I will have to work to keep things simplified. I think it is hard for me to simplify because of my extensive background in drawing. Thoughts and comments are welcome!
